Derek Owens
Dr. Derek Owens graduated with a Master of Nurse Anesthesia in 2009, a Doctorate of Anesthesia Practice in 2015, and later completed a fellowship in Acute Surgical Pain Management at Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia. Dr. Owens has practiced in a multitude of settings from medical mission trips in the Philippines, Mexico, and Guatemala, large hospital anesthesia groups, small community hospitals, mobile military resuscitative surgical systems and military ships. After separating from the Navy in 2018 he has served as Chief CRNA of two different groups, both providing full practice autonomy for CRNA's. Dr. Owens has also been on the faculty of Mary Baldwin University's DNP Nurse Anesthesiology Program since 2022, specializing in physiology, pathophysiology, pain management and admissions.
Meet the instructors
Katy Dean
Ms. Dean graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Master of Nurse Anesthesia in 2003, and has worked in a wide range of facilities from Level I trauma centers and military surgical facilities to regional hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. She currently practices at the first CRNA-only ASC in the Hampton Roads area. Katy has also served in a variety of leadership and advocacy roles throughout her career, and has held adjunct faculty teaching positions at both VCU and Old Dominion University, specializing in physiology, pathophysiology, and simulation.
